If, like me, you enjoy PC games of strategy but find the restrictions, usually on cash, spoil the fun, then here are some tips I have discovered.
Virtually all the hints below are NOT my own invention, but lifted from Newsgroups, other web sites, or e-mail messages that I have seen.
To the best of my knowledge there are no copyright infringements, everything below is free and open!
I may add that those games referred to below were all purchased legitimately by myself.
I only offer comments on the following well-known games, I am afraid the time I get to play games is limited.

SIM CITY 2000
The notes here refer to the Windows version of SIM CITY 2000 by Maxis. An altogether excellent game of strategy to build a city like a phoenix out of the dust, providing zoned industrial, commercial and residential areas, not forgetting the essential services, recreation and power. The only problem is that you are given $20000 to start with, and all extra must come from setting tax levels, and income generated through growth of your city. Yes, it is possible to stay solvent, but it is frustrating, time-consuming, and, frankly, can spoil the fun!! Hell, playing games is supposed to be fun, not frustrating, isn't it! There are a number of instant cheats involving pausing the game, placing the mouse cursor on the toolbar header strip, and typing the following: buddamus - gives $500,000 plus all awards! (Windows 3.x) priscilla - gives excellent debug menu for Windows 95 oivaizmir - opens up a debug menu with lots of extra facilities. gilmartin - gives you a military base if space is available. cass - instant $250 but use too often and fires start! There is however a cash editor facility that will just alter the amount of dosh without affecting the facilities or award situation. It is from Jerry Moore who has a ftp site with loads of game utilities. The hex editor program is called SC2HEX2.exe and I have brought it here for you to download from Jerry's ftp site. DOWNLOAD SC2HEX2.EXE NOW (size 13K) To use the utility, place it in the /CITIES directory along with your .SC2 files, and then run the file as an executable and hey presto! FREE - Download a blank World ready to build on, but instead of the usual 20,000 you have million$ to start with. Click here on the name, which is NEWTOWN - happy playing! Just download to your /CITIES directory and the file (size 50K) should be ready to play.

There are a number of instant cheats involving pausing the game, placing the mouse cursor on the toolbar header strip, and typing the following:

SIM CITY 3000
It is possible to invoke a cash cheat by hex code editing, or enter known cheat codes at a text box when you press [Ctrl], [Shift] and [C] together. First the hex code cash cheat. From a new game where you only have 50,000 cash units, get this up to a six figure amount by getting loans. This will make your current cash balance, say, 300000. You then need to convert this decimal amount to hex, reverse the digit pairs, and find the code in the game save file. For example, here are hex codes to look for in the game save files for three possible total cash amounts. 200000=40 0d 03 225000=e8 6e 03 250000=90 d0 03 300000=e0 93 04 To convert any other sum, just use a hex base converter. Now you need to open your game save file using a hex editor. There are a number of such things available, XTREE Gold will do, UltraEdit32, or Hex Workshop are possibles. Search for the hex string above in the program, though make sure it appears after line 0x5020 Overtype the hex code with ff ff ff and save the file. You will also need to cancel the loan by changing 05 to 06 just to the right of the cash amount. Save the file, and exit the hex editing program. If you have SC3K running, re-load your game WITHOUT saving the game first, and when you pick up the new file, it should have loads-a-dosh! Now the cheat code box, and here are just a few of the more useful ones. Remember, press [Ctrl], [Shift] and [C] together and a box will appear at the top of the screen. "i am weak" all buildings, utilities and infrastructure are free. "power to the masses" gives you all power plants. "water in the desert" gives you all water plants. "nerdz rool" high tech industry, pollutes less. "garbage in, garbage out" all garbage building available. "pay tribute to your king" all rewards and opportunities become available.

SIM CITY 3000

Overtype the hex code with ff ff ff and save the file.
You will also need to cancel the loan by changing 05 to 06 just to the right of the cash amount.
Save the file, and exit the hex editing program.
If you have SC3K running, re-load your game WITHOUT saving the game first, and when you pick up the new file, it should have loads-a-dosh!

Now the cheat code box, and here are just a few of the more useful ones.
Remember, press [Ctrl], [Shift] and [C] together and a box will appear at the top of the screen.
"i am weak" all buildings, utilities and infrastructure are free.
"power to the masses" gives you all power plants.
"water in the desert" gives you all water plants.
"nerdz rool" high tech industry, pollutes less.
"garbage in, garbage out" all garbage building available.
"pay tribute to your king" all rewards and opportunities become available.

THEME HOSPITAL
Use the fax machine in the game to type in and send the following numbers. Type in 7287 to go to rat shoot after winning level. Type in and send code 24328 to enable the following in-game cheat codes Shift C - Get $10,000 Cntrl C - All research completed. Cntrl Y - End year Cntrl M - End month Shift Cntrl C - All items in the game. Also to jump levels, go to the /LEVELS directory, and rename file suffixes to reflect the required level, for example rename FULL03.SAM to FULL06.SAM and LEVEL.L03 to LEVEL.L06 if jumping from level to level 6.

THEME HOSPITAL

TRANSPORT TYCOON
This is the PC game by Microprose designed and written by Chris Sawyer. An extremely useful patch and cheats site can be found at http://ttdpatch.net This works on the Transport Tycoon Deluxe version (not the original) One of the difficulties with Transport Tycoon is that it may not install and run on modern operating systems or PC's. The way to overcome this is to install a FAT16 partition on your HDD, install WIN9x on it, and Tycoon should run okay. You will encounter problems if you try to install and run the program on a FAT32 or NTFS partition. A FAT partition should be under 2048MB and one idea is to have a dual-boot PC! I have gone through this issue and anyone wanting more specific advice on installation can email me and I will try and advise you what to do.

TRANSPORT TYCOON

This is the PC game by Microprose designed and written by Chris Sawyer.

An extremely useful patch and cheats site can be found at http://ttdpatch.net
This works on the Transport Tycoon Deluxe version (not the original)
One of the difficulties with Transport Tycoon is that it may not install and run on modern operating systems or PC's.
The way to overcome this is to install a FAT16 partition on your HDD, install WIN9x on it, and Tycoon should run okay.
You will encounter problems if you try to install and run the program on a FAT32 or NTFS partition.
A FAT partition should be under 2048MB and one idea is to have a dual-boot PC!
I have gone through this issue and anyone wanting more specific advice on installation can email me and I will try and advise you what to do.

THEME PARK
This is the DOS game by Bullfrog. Again, like so many of these strategy games, money is the problem. However a nice little hex editing utility has been found (source unknown, sorry!) which allows you to edit a game save and make your bank balance any amount you like. DOWNLOAD TPARKCHT.EXE (10K) To use the utility, place it in the same directory as your saved games, probably /SAVE Go to the command prompt and type in the following fomat for a game save, for example, MYGAME.G1 TPARKCHT MYGAME.G1 50000 There is a space between the words. This will give you 50,000 for the stated game save, but you choose the amount of money you want! Another, less effective cheat is to use the name HORZA as your nickname, and every time you press shift C you get a cash cheat!

THEME PARK

Another, less effective cheat is to use the name HORZA as your nickname, and every time you press shift C you get a cash cheat!

SIM TOWER
This is the Maxis game for Windows. Like many strategy games, it is a bind to be always running out of money - I find a PC game is for enjoyment, not sheer frustration! However, I discovered a little fiddle that allows you to give yourself as much money as you want, by means of a little hex file editing. You will need to be able to modify your game save file in hex mode, I personally use Xtree Gold, but you can use the likes of Hex Workshop by Breakpoint Software (available from TUCOWS site) which is shareware. Here is how to set a fixed amount of dosh in SIM TOWER Choose the amount you want, say 1 million units. Divide by 100, which gives 10000 Using Microsoft Calculator (supplied with the Windows package), or any scientific calculator, enter the decimal amount 10000 Press the HEX key (in scientific mode) and you get an instant conversion which is 2710 Swap the number pairs around to give 10 27 Next go to your chosen hex editor program and locate the .TDT file for your tower game save and view in Hex mode. Another reader offered an intriguing way of getting over $1 Million, plus all 5 stars and all building units.
Tke a note of the file location and name of your game save file (ends in .tdt)
Go to DOS prompt and type the following in MS-DOS:
debug *.tdt
e 102 5
e 106 ff
w
q
* = file name of the save game
This has been tested and it does work!
