When I started with the Internet back in 1997 using a Compuserve Account and 14.4K dial-up Modems it all seemed a lot more ethical somehow!
There were not the range of web sites that you get nowadays but what did exist seemed to be genuinely useful and almost invariably free. And I mean not just that they were not trying to flog you something, but there never seemed to be the need to log in, register or otherwise impart your personal details.
Things moved on and by the early 21st Century I had my own domain name, broadband meant that content could be more interesting and of course the quality and diversity of the internet expanded out of all proportion.
A consequence of this was that the ethos of the early days was replaced by a more hard-edged commercialism. Everyone seems to be selling something, either that or the need to register, login, create an account or otherwise leave an email address.
My small hobby-based web suite called coldal web pages (including ukrepeater.net) costs me very little to run; the domain registration and shared hosting package I can easily afford, and maintaining it is relatively easy.
If I want to sell something I will use eBay or Amazon, I see no need to require log-ins, registration or otherwise get your details and definitely no need for the ubiquitous "Ads by Google" that seems to appear on practically every web site nowadays!
I have experimented with feedback guestbooks, response links and return email links but the scope for abuse became so high that now just a simple feedback form should anyone wish to comment or contact me.
I hope you enjoy the miscellany on coldal web pages and will feel that you can browse and enjoy without having to worry about a sales pitch or having to register any personal details....and NO "Ads by Google!"
